Synopsis : No kids! No pets! No men!
It’s the perfect life for uptight thirty-seven-year-old Rachel McGivney, a career-woman who’s struggled for years to gain a foothold in business and keep her emotions under control.
When Garrett Yates, her high school crush and now a high-powered lawyer, returns to town and wants to foist Jamie Sorenson, a mischievous nine-year-old orphan and his aggravating sheep dog, on her, Rachel rebels.
She doesn’t want the kid or his dog, and she’s definitely not ready to be Jamie’s guardian. That would open up too many sad memories of a time when she was involved in a disastrous event, involving another young child.
To complicate matters, Garrett’s presence reminds Rachel of unrequited love. Handsome and persistent, Garrett believes in Rachel and trusts her to be the right person for Jamie.
But can Rachel learn to trust herself?
Review : First of all, I would like to thank Sherile Reilly for sending me an ARC of her novel. It was a pleasure to discover your world and writing!
When the author introduced me her novel, I immediately knew that I would enjoy reading it but I didn’t know that I would totally love it! From the very beginning, I could relate to the main character, Rachel. Not that I don’t want to be married or have a family to live with, but I’m kinda a lonely woman who loves her calm life too. That being said, I was wondering how I would react if I had to live the same things that she has to face in a little time. Indeed, her life changes a lot and she doesn’t really have the choice to accept these changes. This story pushes forward the questions of responsibility, adulthood, love and self-confidence. This is a very strong novel with hard themes but which is perfectly linked to our current society. The characters are moving, just like the plot itself, and well constructed. We easily see how they are complex but we can relate to them without any difficulties because we can have the same problems than them.
At first, I thought that it would be a light novel with a love story and cute characters but I was wrong. There are deep thoughts in this one and characters, even if they are really cute and lovable, are above all strong and moving, as I have already said. They sometimes broke my heart, when they talked about their past and hard times and sometimes, they warmed my heart with love and beautiful relationships.
This novel will lead you from smile to tears and from tears to smile. This is a beautiful one that you have to read as soon as possible!
I am now curious to know what will happen to Jamie, Rachel, Garrett and Dottie in the second part of this trilogy…
